Art that carries
the soul of Sarawak.
The Borneo Hotel is proud to exhibit original works by Sarawakian artists throughout our cafe and public spaces. Every painting on these walls carries a story of this land, its people, and its living heritage.
Anthony Roseli Ripen
A semi-abstract artwork entitled "Echoes of the Hornbill's Nature" by local artist Anthony Roseli Ripen has been selected by The Borneo Hotel, Kuching as one of the main artworks displayed in its exhibition space. The selection of this piece reflects an appreciation for local artistic values that elevate the cultural identity of Sarawak through contemporary visual expression.
The artwork presents a combination of semi-abstract elements rich in local cultural symbolism, making it unique and deeply connected to the spirit of the Bornean community. Through the use of organic lines, swirling patterns, and dynamic colours, Anthony successfully expresses local cultural interpretations in a modern form while remaining rooted in traditional heritage.
According to Anthony Roseli, this work was inspired by the diversity of cultures, ethnic carvings, traditional motifs, and the close relationship between local communities and the natural environment — translated into free-flowing visual forms that carry profound messages about the strength of identity and the uniqueness of local heritage.
The selection and display of semi-abstract artworks at The Borneo Hotel — themed around the Sound of Nature, the beauty of flora and fauna, the Bidayuh Baruk, and the Tango — are not merely decorative elements. They carry strong values of identity, heritage, and cultural storytelling.
The semi-abstract approach was chosen because this style provides visitors with space to interpret the meaning of the artworks more deeply, while preserving visual elements closely linked to local cultural identity — traditional motifs, ethnic attire, carving patterns, and heritage symbols.
This makes the artworks more dynamic, modern, and relevant to the hotel's atmosphere, which seeks to highlight contemporary values without neglecting cultural roots.
Art is not merely decoration, but a symbol of appreciation for cultural roots that continue to live and grow through the creativity of the present generation.
The presence of artwork at The Borneo Hotel not only beautifies the space but also serves as a storytelling medium for visitors from outside Sarawak — introducing them to the richness of Sarawak's art and culture. Each displayed artwork becomes a unique attraction in itself, creating a distinctive visual experience that guests carry home long after their stay.
We are proud to support and uplift the talents of Sarawak's artists, and to position The Borneo Hotel as a space for the appreciation of local art and cultural heritage — not merely a place to stay, but a place to discover.
